Weigh your checked bag at home before you leave
A cheap luggage scale beats a counter fee with no way to negotiate it.
Why it works
Airline scales at the counter are usually the first time a traveller learns they are over the limit, and the fee is charged on the spot. A handheld luggage scale takes ten seconds and catches it before you have left the house.

Wear your heaviest items instead of packing them
A jacket and boots on your back don't count toward the bag's weight.
Book directly with the airline, not a third-party reseller
Same price more often than not, and the airline can actually help when something goes wrong.
Fly Tuesday or Wednesday, book six to eight weeks out
The dullest travel days are the cheapest ones.
Match the number plate on the app to the cab before getting in
Ten seconds of checking beats an entirely wrong ride.
Buy a multi-day transit pass instead of single tickets
Break-even is usually just three or four rides.
Bring an empty refillable bottle for a long train journey
Station and onboard water is priced for a captive audience; the platform tap isn't.
